Karlsplatz

The second museum I visited today was the Wien Museum, located at an area called Karlsplatz.

These are photos of the area there.

My U-bahn (underground) train stop was at Karlsplatz.  Above ground are these 2 identical stations, which are explained here:  "This former station of the Viennese Stadtbahn, designed by Otto Wagner, was opened as Akademiestrasse in 1899. The twin entrance pavilions combine elements of art nouveau (or Jugenstil) to create a beautiful curving canopy; a green, wrought-iron frame inset with thin marble panels featuring a sunflower motif, and enhanced with beautiful golden trimmings. When, in 1981, the line changed from Stadtbahn to U-Bahn, the structures lost their function and became defunct. One pavilion now houses a café whilst the other is a temporary exhibition space for the Historisches Museum."  ~http://www.anaustriaattraction.com/austria-attractions-qz/karlsplatz-station.htm

A few months ago, I'd read an article on CNN about the top 8 or 10 most beautiful train stations in the world, and this was one of them.  (I can't find the article, so you'll just have to believe me on this.)  :)

This is Karlskirche ("St. Charles' Church").  It's located adjacent to the museum.  I didn't go in, so you can click here to view some images of its beautiful interior.

While in the museum, I learned that criminals were buried under what is now sidewalks and a small park.  Gross!
